 1 Joining the Math Competition

It started with a poster in the hallway.
It said, “Join the Math Competition!”
At first, I walked past it.
Then my teacher pointed it out and said, “You should try!”
I thought about it all day.

That night, I talked to my parents.
They said, “Give it a try. Win or lose, you’ll learn something.”
So the next day, I signed up.
My heart beat fast, but I felt brave.

The teacher gave us practice sheets.
Every night, I sat down and worked on the problems.
Some were easy. Some made my head spin.
I looked up strategies online.
I also asked my friend to help me with the hard ones.

Sometimes I wanted to give up.
But I kept going, one question at a time.
My dad checked my answers.
My mom made snacks to keep me focused.

One day, I got stuck on a tricky puzzle.
I walked away, rested, and came back later.
Then I finally solved it!

Soon, the big day came.
I woke up early, got dressed, and packed my pencil and eraser.
When I got to the school, students from other classes were there too.
We lined up and went into the test room.

I sat down, looked at the clock, and took a deep breath.
The teacher passed out the test papers.
I opened mine and read through each question.
Some looked scary. Others looked fun.

I started to solve the easy ones first.
Then I moved on to the harder ones.
I crossed out wrong answers and checked my work twice.
I finished just in time and turned in my paper.

After the test, I talked with my friends.
We laughed about silly mistakes and shared tips.
The teacher said, “You all did great.”

A few days later, the results came out.
I walked over to the list and looked for my name.
There it was—4th place!
I smiled big and jumped up with joy.

I ran home and told my family.
They cheered and said, “We’re proud of you!”

Now, I’m not afraid of big math problems anymore.
Because I know how to try, how to think, and how to keep going.
And that’s what really counts.
