Listening to My Friend’s Sad Story
It started on a cloudy Wednesday.
During lunch, I noticed that my friend Mina was very quiet.
She usually laughs a lot, but today she just looked down.
I sat next to her and asked, “Are you okay?”
She didn’t answer at first.
Then she said, “I’m not feeling good.”
I asked, “Do you want to talk about it?”
She nodded, so we walked to a bench outside.
We sat down, and Mina took a deep breath.
She said her dog had passed away last weekend.
She looked away as tears came to her eyes.
I didn’t know what to say, so I just listened.
She shared how her dog would always wait for her after school.
“He used to run to me and follow me around,” she said.
I could see she really missed him.
She cried, and I gave her a tissue.
I didn’t speak. I just sat with her.
We stayed there for a while.
She said, “I feel like no one understands.”
I said, “I do.”
Sometimes just being there is enough.
Later, I walked back to class with her.
She still looked sad, but a little lighter.
I told her, “You don’t have to feel okay all the time.”
She smiled a little, and that made me smile too.
That evening, she sent me a message.
She wrote, “Thanks for being there today.”
I replied, “Always.”
The next day, we sat together again.
She talked more about her dog and memories.
I told her about my old cat, and how I missed her too.
We both laughed at some funny pet stories.
During art class, Mina drew her dog.
It was a happy drawing.
I walked over and said, “That’s beautiful.”
She said, “Thanks. I feel better when I draw him.”
We put her drawing up on the wall.
Our teacher walked by and smiled.
Later, our class clapped when Mina shared her drawing.
That moment showed me something important.
Listening is not about fixing someone.
It’s about showing you care.
Now, I always try to be there when someone feels sad.
Even if I don’t have the right words.
Because a friend who listens is a friend who helps.
