He got a special lifetime achievement award at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

 

When he gave his speech, he talked about something very important.

He said that in his country, people are trying hard to protect democracy.

Democracy means that people have the right to speak freely and vote.

 

He said,

 

“Art is for everyone.

Art brings people together.

Art tells the truth.

That is why some leaders are afraid of art.”

 

He also talked about former President Donald Trump.

He said Trump is not helping art or schools.

Trump cut money for art and education.

He also wants to add extra taxes on movies from other countries.

“You can’t put a price on creativity. Art is very special.”

 

De Niro told people they must act now.

He said we must speak up and vote.

We should not fight with violence, but with strong hearts and peaceful actions.
