1 Showing Off a New Bag (Extended Version) 

Jua put on her new pink bag and spun around in front of the mirror.
"Wow~ It’s so pretty! It has sparkles too!" she said.

Mom smiled and said,
"You look great, but don’t show off too much.
And be careful at school."

Jua nodded. "Okay, Mom!"
She picked up her lunch box and water bottle.
Then she walked out the door with a big smile.

The sun was shining, and birds were singing.
Jua felt happy and proud.
"This is the best bag ever!" she thought.

When she got to school, she saw her friends.
She ran to them and shouted,
"Hey, guys! Look at my bag! I got it yesterday!"

Subin opened her eyes wide.
"Wow~ It’s so pretty! I wanted a bag like that too!"

Jua turned around to show the sparkles.
"It even shines in the sun!" she said.

Then Jua looked at Minseong, who was sitting quietly.
He didn’t say anything.
His bag looked old, and the color was a little faded.

Jua walked over and said,
"Minseong, your bag is cool too!
That orange color looks really good on you!"

Minseong looked up and smiled.
"Thanks. This was my sister’s bag.
She gave it to me when I started school."

Jua smiled back.
"It looks strong and bright. I like it!"

After class, Minseong came over to Jua.
"Jua, thank you. I felt happy when you said that."

Jua’s heart felt warm.
She thought,
‘It’s fun to show off new things,
but it’s even better to be kind to my friends.’

From that day on,
Jua started to say warm and nice words
more than showing her pretty things.
And that made her feel even happier.

주아는 새 분홍색 가방을 메고 거울 앞에서 휙 돌아보았어요.
"와~ 정말 예쁘네! 반짝이도 있잖아!" 주아가 말했어요.
엄마가 웃으며 말했어요.
"멋져 보여. 하지만 너무 과시하지 마.
그리고 학교에서 조심해야 해."
주아는 고개를 끄덕였어요. "알았어, 엄마!"
주아는 도시락과 물병을 집어 들었어요.
그리고는 활짝 웃으며 문밖으로 나갔어요.
햇살이 따사롭고 새들이 지저귀고 있었어요.
주아는 행복하고 자랑스러웠어요.
"이 가방, 세상에서 제일 멋진 거야!" 주아는 생각했어요.
학교에 도착해서 친구들을 보았어요.
주아는 친구들한테 달려가서 소리쳤어요.
"얘들아! 내 가방 좀 봐! 어제 샀어!"
수빈은 눈을 크게 떴어요.
"와~ 정말 예쁘네! 나도 저런 가방 갖고 싶었어!"
주아는 반짝이를 보여주기 위해 돌아보았어요.
"햇살 아래에서도 반짝반짝 빛나!" 주아가 말했어요.
그때 주아는 조용히 앉아 있는 민성을 바라보았다.
민성은 아무 말도 하지 않았다.
가방은 낡아 보였고, 색깔도 약간 바랬다.
주아가 다가와 말했다.
"민성아, 네 가방도 멋지다!
주황색이 너한테 정말 잘 어울린다!"
민성은 고개를 들고 미소 지었다.
"고마워. 이건 우리 언니 가방이야.
내가 학교에 입학했을 때 언니가 준 거야."
주아도 미소 지었다.
"강하고 밝아 보여. 마음에 들어!"
수업이 끝나고 민성이 주아에게 다가왔다.
"주아, 고마워. 네가 그렇게 말해줘서 기뻤어."
주아의 마음이 따뜻해졌다.
주아는 생각했다.
"새로운 것을 보여주는 것도 즐겁지만
친구들에게 친절하게 대하는 게 더 좋다."
그날부터
주아는 예쁜 것을 보여주는 것보다
따뜻하고 좋은 말을 하기 시작했다.
그리고 그 말은 주아를 더욱 행복하게 했다.
