1 Talking About School Rules

Today at school, our teacher asked us to talk about the rules.
She said, “What rules do you think are most important?”
We sat down in a circle and looked at each other.
At first, no one wanted to speak.
Then I raised my hand and said, “We need to be kind to everyone.”
My teacher nodded and wrote that on the board.
Next, Jina stood up and said, “No phones during class.”
Some students laughed, but others agreed.
Phones can be fun, but they also take away our focus.
Minho brought up the rule about being on time.

He said, “I always run, but I still get marked late.”
The teacher smiled and said, “Let’s talk about fairness.”
We talked about how the front gate closes too fast.
One student shared how he got locked out one day.
We all felt bad for him.
So we wrote down a new idea: keep the gate open five more minutes.
Next, we moved on to rules in the lunchroom.
People sometimes cut in line, and that’s not fair.
Yuna suggested making line leaders.
We liked that idea.

Then someone mentioned cleaning duties.
We take turns each week, but some people skip out.
So we decided to make a chart and mark names.
This way, everyone can see who did their job.
We also talked about classroom noise.
Some kids yell out answers without raising hands.
The teacher said, “Let’s go over what respect looks like.”
We all gave examples, like waiting your turn and listening.
That led us to the next idea — listening better.
It’s not just about being quiet, but showing you care.

I shared that sometimes people talk while others are crying.
Everyone got quiet when I said that.
Then Minji said, “Maybe we should have quiet zones.”
We liked that idea too.
So we wrote it down on the board.
We had so many ideas, the teacher said, “Let’s make posters!”
We each chose one rule to draw.
I picked the one about kindness.
I drew two kids helping each other and smiling.

Jina used red and green to show stop and go signs.
Minho cut out shapes and glued them on the paper.
Soon, our classroom was full of color and rules.
We put up the posters on the wall.
The teacher took photos and said, “I’m proud of you all.”
Later that day, I thought about why we need rules.
At first, I thought rules were boring.
But now I see that they help us stay safe.
Rules help us get along and learn better.

When I got home, I told my mom about the day.
She listened and said, “Every good place needs good rules.”
I smiled and said, “And we made ours today.”
She hugged me and said she was proud.
That night, I wrote in my diary, “Rules aren’t just rules. They’re care.”
Tomorrow, I will try harder to follow them.
Not because I have to, but because I want to.
If everyone follows the rules, school will be a better place.
Not perfect, but better.
That’s what we learned today, together.
