A New Girl in Our Class: Younghee

Last week, a new girl came into our class.
Her name is Younghee.
She is from Korea.

Younghee looked so pretty.
She put on a cute pink lip balm and a pretty hairband.
Her long, shiny hair fell over her shoulders, and her cheeks were soft and pink like a peach.

When she walked in, all the boys looked at her.
Some boys even stood up to see her better!
"Wow, she is so pretty," one boy whispered.

Our teacher called on Younghee and said,
"Please come up here and say hello."

Younghee smiled and stood up.
She walked up to the front of the class and said,
"Hello, everyone. My name is Younghee. Nice to meet you!"
Her voice was sweet and kind.

During break time, boys gathered around Younghee.
They talked to her and asked many questions.
"Where are you from?"
"Do you like soccer?"
"What's your favorite color?"

Younghee laughed and answered,
"I like pink! And I like dogs!"

I wanted to go over to her too, but I felt a little shy.
"What if she doesn’t like me?" I thought.
"Should I walk up to her or just sit here?"

Finally, I got up and went over to Younghee.
"Hi, I’m Mia. Can I sit next to you?" I asked with a small smile.

Younghee looked at me and smiled brightly.
"Sure! Let’s be friends!" she said.
Her smile made me feel warm and happy.

We started to talk about our favorite books.
"I love fairy tales," I said.
Younghee said, "Me too! I love stories with princesses."
We laughed together.

The boys looked over at us and smiled.
Now, we hang out together every day!

Younghee and I walk home together, talk about our day, and sometimes play with dolls and toys.
We even make up little stories and act like princesses in a castle.

I’m so glad I was brave to go over to her.
Now I have a wonderful new friend!

And do you know what?
Now, when boys look at Younghee, she smiles, but then she looks at me too and says,
"Let’s go, Mia!"
She is my friend, and I am hers.
