1 Writing a Story Instead of a Picture Diary
Today, something different happened in class.
Our teacher usually asks us to draw a picture diary every week.
But this time, she told us to write about any topic we wanted.
She said, “You can choose anything you care about.”
I looked around and saw my friends whispering with ideas.
I sat down with my notebook and thought about what I liked.
Drawing? Boring. Soccer? Too short.
Then I remembered something.
Last weekend, I helped my sister take care of a baby bird.
So I started to write about it.
I wrote down the day we found the bird under a tree.
It was small and cold.
My sister picked it up and said, “We need to help.”
We brought it home and made a soft bed.
I fed it water with a spoon.
My dad called the vet, and the vet told us to keep it warm.
We watched it sleep.
We gave it a name—Peep.
Every morning, I checked on Peep before school.
After school, I read to it.
Even though it didn’t understand, it looked at me and chirped.
In my writing, I described all of that.
How Peep got stronger, how it stood up, how it flapped its wings.
One day, it flew to the window and sat there.
It looked outside, and we knew what it wanted.
So we opened the window, and it flew away.
I missed it, but I felt proud.
After I finished the story, I read it over twice.
I fixed the spelling and added more details.
Then I turned it in to the teacher.
The next day, she gave it back with a big star.
She wrote, “This is touching. Great job!”
I smiled and felt warm inside.
Later, she asked me to read it in front of the class.
I was shy but I said, “Okay.”
I stood up, held my paper, and read aloud.
My friends listened quietly.
Some even clapped at the end.
That day, I didn’t draw anything,
but I shared a story from my heart.
Now I think writing is fun.
It helps me remember things, express feelings, and show who I am.
Next week, I want to write about my trip to the mountains.
Or maybe I’ll make up a story about a flying turtle.
Who knows?
What I do know is this:
Sometimes words are just as colorful as pictures.
