Jin-Dol the Birthday Puppy
A true story of a wish that came true
A Birthday Wish
Next Monday is my birthday. I will turn ten!
For weeks, I have been thinking about my birthday wish.
I wrote down a list: new pencils, cool shoes, art supplies…
But my biggest wish was not on the list.
Last night, Dad came in to my room.
He sat down next to me and smiled.
“Your birthday is coming soon,” he said.
“What do you want this year?”
I looked at him and took a deep breath.
“I want a dog,” I said.
“A real one. A puppy. A white Jindo puppy!”
🙅 Mom Says No
The next morning, I ran out to the kitchen.
Mom was making eggs. I told her,
“Dad asked me what I want for my birthday. I said… a puppy!”
Mom turned around with a big spoon in her hand.
“A puppy?” she said. “Oh no. Dogs are hard to care for.”
I tried to smile. “I’ll do everything, Mom! I’ll wake up early,
I’ll take care of it, I’ll clean up after it, I’ll train it!”
She shook her head.
“Dogs need a lot of time. And they make messes,” she said.
I was a little sad.
But I didn’t give up.
That night, I cut out a photo of a white Jindo puppy
from a book and put it up on the fridge.
🎁 The Best Surprise Ever
Three days later, something special happened.
It was Saturday morning. I was still in bed when I heard Dad call out:
“Come outside!”
I got up, still sleepy, and ran down the stairs.
When I opened up the front door, I couldn’t believe my eyes.
There he was.
Dad was holding a tiny, fluffy, white puppy.
“Is… is that a Jindo dog?” I asked.
Dad smiled and nodded.
“His name is Jin-Dol,” he said.
“Even though Mom said no, I wanted to give you something from the heart.”
I picked him up gently and hugged him.
He smelled like milk and sunshine.
🐶 Meet Jin-Dol
We brought him in and showed him around the house.
He walked slowly and looked around with his small eyes.
Jin-Dol didn’t bark. He was calm and curious.
Dad told me,
“Jindo dogs are very smart.
They don’t usually go potty inside the house.
But you still need to train him well.”
I nodded quickly. “I will. I promise!”
🤝 My Promise to Mom
I went to Mom and said,
“I know you didn’t really want a dog.
But thank you for letting me have Jin-Dol.”
She looked at me and said,
“You need to look after him, every day. No excuses.”
I raised my hand like a scout.
“I promise, Mom. I’ll wake up early,
walk around the block with him, and clean up after him.”
Mom smiled a little and said,
“Then we’ll see how well you keep that promise.”
☀️ New Mornings with Jin-Dol
The next morning, the sun was not even up yet.
But I was!
I woke up, got dressed, and grabbed Jin-Dol’s leash.
We went outside, and he sniffed around the trees.
He was learning where to go potty.
I was so proud when he did it!
When we came back, Mom was in the kitchen.
“Guess what,” I said. “Jin-Dol went potty outside!”
She turned and smiled.
“Good job, both of you,” she said.
🎉 My Real Gift
Now, every morning, I get up,
take Jin-Dol out, and walk around the park.
He is getting stronger and smarter every day.
And I feel like I am, too.
Jin-Dol was the best birthday gift ever.
Even better than shoes, toys, or cake.
Because he is my friend—and I’m his person.
