Ehud – The Brave Man Chosen by God

(A Bible Story for Kids – Easy English)

A long time ago, the people of Israel were happy.
They lived in peace and had food and homes.
But after many years, they forgot about God.
They turned away from His laws.
They followed after other gods and did bad things.

God was not happy.

So He let King Eglon of Moab take over Israel.
King Eglon was very mean and strong.
He made the people give back money and food every year.

For 18 years, the people of Israel were very sad.
They had to work hard and had little food.
They cried, "Why is this happening?"
Then they cried out to God and said,
“God, please help us! We are sorry!”

God heard them. He still loved them.
So He picked out a brave man named Ehud.

Ehud was different. He was left-handed,
which was not common in his time.
Most people used the right hand,
so soldiers did not look out for left-handed men.

God gave Ehud a plan.
Ehud made a short sword.
He put it on his right leg under his clothes.
People did not expect a weapon there.

Ehud went with other men to give back the king’s money.
The men all walked together to the palace.
Big soldiers stood around the king.
They looked over the gifts.
But they did not find out Ehud’s sword.

Ehud and the men bowed down to the king.
The king smiled and laughed.
He liked money and gifts.

After giving the money, the men went out of the palace.
Ehud walked out with them.
But then he turned back alone.

He went to the guards and said,
“I have a secret message for the king.”

The guards let him in.
King Eglon was sitting in his cool room.
He was very fat and slow.
He told his helpers to go out.
Now Ehud was alone with the king.

Ehud said, “This message is from God!”
He took out the sword from his leg and stabbed the king.
The sword went in deep. The fat closed over it.
The king fell down. He did not move.

Ehud locked up the door and ran away.
He went down the stairs and got out safely.

Later, the king’s men came back.
They saw the door was locked.
They thought the king was resting.
They waited for a long time.
But when they opened up the door,
they saw the king was dead!

Ehud had already got away.
He went up the hill and called out to the people.
“Come with me! God is with us!”

The men of Israel stood up and ran after Ehud.
They took over the roads.
They fought off the Moab army.
All the soldiers of Moab were killed.
Not one man got away.

God gave peace to Israel for 80 years.
Ehud looked after the people well.
They were safe and free.
And they did not forget about God again for a long time.
