Jin-Dol the Puppy
Next Monday is my birthday. I will be ten years old!
I’m so excited. I already wrote down a list of things I want.
New shoes, art pens… and one big wish.
Last night, Dad came in to my room.
He sat down beside me and smiled.
“Hey,” he said, “your birthday is coming up.
What do you want this year?”
I sat up fast. “Can I tell you the truth?”
Dad nodded. “Of course!”
I looked at him and said,
“I really, really want a dog.”
The next morning, I woke up and ran out to the kitchen.
Mom was making breakfast. I smiled and said,
“Guess what! I told Dad I want a puppy!”
Mom turned around fast.
“A puppy? Hmm… I don’t know about that.”
I looked down. “Please, Mom…”
But she shook her head.
“Dogs are a lot of work,” she said.
“Who will take care of it? Feed it? Clean up after it?”
“I will!” I said. “I promise! I’ll wake up early and walk around with it every morning!”
Mom looked at me with one eyebrow up.
“We’ll see,” she said.
That means “probably no.”
I felt a little sad, but I didn’t give up.
I even cut out a picture of a white Jindo puppy and put it up on the fridge.
A few days later, something amazing happened.
It was Saturday morning. I was still in bed when I heard Dad call out to me.
“Come outside!” he said.
I got up fast and ran down the stairs.
I opened up the door and—WOW!
Dad was holding a little white puppy!
Its ears were small, and its eyes were soft and sleepy.
I picked it up carefully and hugged it close.
“So fluffy!” I said.
“Happy early birthday,” Dad said.
“Even though Mom didn’t really agree, I wanted to give you something special.”
We named the puppy Jin-Dol.
He is a white Jindo dog.
Dad told me, “Jindos don’t go potty inside the house.
But still, you need to train him and take him out every day.”
I nodded. “I’ll do it, Dad. I’ll do everything.”
I went to Mom and said,
“Mom, thank you for saying okay.
I promise I’ll look after Jin-Dol.
I’ll wake up early, walk around with him, and clean up after him.”
Mom smiled a little and patted my head.
The next day, I woke up before the sun.
I put on my jacket and Jin-Dol’s leash.
We went outside and walked around the park.
Jin-Dol sniffed around and wagged his tail.
He even went potty outside for the first time!
When we got home, Mom was in the kitchen.
I said, “Mom, Jin-Dol did it! He went potty outside!”
She laughed. “Good boy, Jin-Dol.
And good job, birthday girl.”
I smiled. This was the best birthday ever.
