Tom’s Big Soccer Match
"Phew, what a relief!" Tom sat up in bed, stretching his arms. He had finally got over his terrible cold.
"This is perfect!" he thought. "The big soccer match is this week, and I’m the striker for our team.
I was so worried I would miss it!"
Tom jumped out of bed and ran down the stairs. "Mom! I’m all better now! I can go to soccer practice!"
Mom looked over and smiled. "That’s great, Tom! But don’t push yourself too hard. You just got better."
"I’ll be careful!" Tom nodded quickly, too excited to slow down.
He had missed a whole week of practice, and he felt bad for his teammates.
"I should have been there to train with them," he thought. "I hope they’re not mad at me."
After a quick breakfast, he put on his soccer jersey, grabbed his water bottle, and headed out the door.
When Tom came into the school field, he saw his teammates already practicing.
He ran over to them and called out, "Hey guys! I’m back!"
His best friend, Jake, turned around and grinned. "Tom! You finally recovered!
We thought you were going to miss the game!"
Emma, one of the team’s best midfielders, walked up and smiled. "We missed you, Tom.
But don’t worry, we trained hard. Are you ready to play?"
Tom laughed out loud. "Of course! I feel stronger than ever!"
The team started their practice match. Tom ran across the field, dribbling the ball.
He passed it to Jake, who kicked it back. Then, Emma sent in a perfect pass, and Tom took a shot—GOAL!
"Yes!" Tom jumped up and cheered. "This is going to be the best match ever!"
After practice, Tom sat down on the grass, breathing hard but feeling happy.
He looked at Emma, who was chatting with her friends.
"Hmm... now’s my chance," he thought. "If I score the winning goal, maybe Emma will be impressed."
Just then, the coach walked over and patted Tom on the back. "Great job today, Tom.
We need you to play your best this weekend. Our team is counting on you."
Tom nodded confidently. "I won’t let you down, Coach!"
He picked up his water bottle and smiled to himself. "Next weekend, I’m going to ask her out!"
That night, Tom lay down in bed, thinking about the big game. He imagined himself scoring the winning goal, his teammates cheering, and Emma smiling at him. "This is my chance," he whispered. "I have to make it count."
