Tom’s Super Sick

Tom came down with a terrible, horrible, no-good, super awful cold. His head was burning hot like a stove, his nose ran like a never-ending waterfall, and he kept coughing like an old car trying to start but failing miserably.

"Mom, I feel so, so bad," he groaned, sinking deeper into his warm, cozy, but somehow uncomfortable bed.

Mom sat down next to him, patting his head gently. "Don’t worry, Tom. You will get better in seven days."

"Seven whole days?! That’s forever!" Tom whined, throwing his arms over his face dramatically.

Mom brought in a steaming bowl of homemade chicken soup and a plate full of colorful, freshly sliced fruit. "Eat this, sweetheart. It will help you feel better."

Tom looked at the food but shook his head dramatically. "I don’t want to eat. Everything tastes like nothing! My taste buds are broken!"

Mom grilled up some sizzling, juicy meat and cut up the freshest, juiciest apples, oranges, and strawberries. "Try this, Tom! It’s your favorite!"

Tom turned away, sighing. "I don’t want anything. I just feel miserable."

Mom picked up his blanket and tucked him in tightly. "Rest now. When you wake up, you might feel a little better."

Tom closed his eyes and drifted off into a deep, stuffy-nosed, snore-filled sleep. But when he woke up, he still felt awful. He let out a loud, dramatic sigh.

"Mom, I am still sick! This is never going to end! I will be sick forever!" he whined, frowning so hard his whole face wrinkled.

Mom smiled knowingly. "That means your body is fighting the cold. Just wait, and soon you’ll be back to running around like normal."

"But I don’t want to wait! I want to feel better now!" Tom grumbled, sinking deeper under his blankets.

For the next few days, Tom took in gallons of warm tea, endless bowls of soup, and mountains of fruit. He watched cartoons, read books, and even tried drawing silly pictures in his notebook to pass the time.

But his nose kept running. His cough wouldn’t stop. He sneezed so hard once that he scared the cat! "This is the worst!" he groaned.

Mom checked on him every hour. "Just a little longer, Tom. You’re getting better every day."

On the fifth day, something magical happened. His nose wasn’t running as much. His cough was a little softer. He even laughed at a funny joke on TV.

By the sixth day, he could finally taste food again. "Mom! The soup is amazing! I forgot how good food was!"

And then, finally, after seven long, exhausting, stuffy-nosed days, he jumped out of bed, arms in the air. "Mom! I feel AMAZING! I am free!"

Mom gave him the biggest, warmest hug. "See? I told you!"

Tom grinned. "Next time, can I just skip the whole sick part and go straight to the hugs and snacks?"

Mom laughed. "Nice try, buddy!"

Tom stretched his arms and took a deep breath. "I’m never getting sick again!" he declared.

Mom raised an eyebrow. "We’ll see about that."

Tom just smiled, ready to finally go outside and play again.
